Exploiting Nature or Destroying Ourselves?

Across India, outwardly in the name of development, and in reality to satisfy the unending greed of the rich and the powerful, forests, fields, parks, mountains, hills, beaches, rivers, lakes, seas and more are being destroyed. Sometimes we hear of this in the news; often, it is done in secret.  Across ages and cultures, across countries and continents, poets and philosophers, sages and scientists have spoken of the immense power and beauty and immeasurable importance of Nature. Imagine fish without water! That is what we humans will be, without Nature. Keep fighting to save Nature. And if we are in any way helping those who destroy Nature, let us remember, we are destroying everything, ourselves included. Future generations will not forgive us. We are fast becoming the ‘Wasteland’ that T.S. Eliot predicted in his epic poem:

"What are the roots that clutch, what branches grow

Out of this stony rubbish? Son of man,

You cannot say, or guess, for you know only

A heap of broken images, where the sun beats,

And the dead tree gives no shelter, the cricket no relief,

And the dry stone no sound of water." (Lines from ‘The Wasteland’ by T.S. Eliot)
