When we separate language learning from our social and cultural roots, we are making a big mistake. When we teach language just as a set of listening, speaking, reading and writing tasks, when we fail to teach our children through stories and poems and plays and our cultural heritage as a whole, we are creating a dangerous divide. Language is an organic component of human society. Separating the teaching and learning of language from the values and knowledge of humanity is like separating the body from the soul. In such an artificial setting, most of our children will struggle to enjoy the language learning process. And those who learn the language will lose touch with humane values. Hence, the most natural and healthiest way to learn any language is through its society, culture and literature.
